For The Love of Barns – Art Exhibit, Barn Tour & Dinner
“A Celebration of Barns through Art & Experience”

For the Love of Barns Art Exhibit, Barn Tour, Dinner & Music, celebrating our love of barns through experience and through the eyes of artists is a collaborative project of the Preble County Fine Arts Center and the Preble County Historical Society.

The art exhibit will run from September 2nd to the 29th at the Preble County Fine Arts Center, located at 601 Hillcrest Dr., Eaton. The reception and exhibit are free and open to the public. Art center hours are Tuesday-Saturday from 1-5pm. Any artist interested in submitting work in For the Love of Barns exhibit may enter up to three (3) works at no charge. Artwork must pertain to barns in someway, be creative, and show us your love of barns! Entries must be received by August 25 at 5pm. Entry forms and further details can be found at www.takepartinart.net, or can be requested by calling 937-456-3999. One Best of Show award will be given at the end of the show. The winning piece will be selected by visitor vote, so make sure to stop in to see the show and cast your vote for your favorite piece of barn artwork.

A Driving Barn Tour & Dinner, ending up at the Preble County Historical Society, will take place on Sunday, September 12 from 1-7pm. The barn driving tour will start at the Art Center giving guests an opportunity to view the barn art exhibit.

Barn tour, dinner, & music tickets are $30.00 per person and include:
§ One raffle ticket for a chance to win artwork and gift cards along with great local prizes!
§ A guided driving tour and stops at four historic Preble County barns with barn historian Steve Gordon:
§ Barns on tour: Dick & Cindy Mitchell, John & Jean Tuggle, Jim & Barb Rohl, and the Preble County Historical Society.
§ At each barn, Steve will give a casual but informative description of the architecture and history of the individual barns, including its historic and modern uses. He will also discuss how these multi-faceted buildings relate to the history of the farmsteads and the Preble County area. At the end of the tour at the Preble County Historical Society, Steve will be available for any additional discussions and questions the participants may have.
§ For more than 20 years, Steve Gordon served as an architectural historian for the Ohio State Historic Preservation Office and then as curator of the McGuffey Museum at Miami University in Oxford, his alma mater. Currently, Steve works as an independent consultant for historic architecture. He has conducted extensive research on historic structures in southwest Ohio, with a special interest in barns and rural architecture.
§ The day ends with an Autumn Dinner & Music at the Preble County Historical Center. Autumn dinner (pulled pork, cheesy potatoes, cole slaw, homemade pies, cookies, & ice cream.
§ Live music provided by Warren & Judy Waldren of Oxford.

2nd ANNUAL PREBLE COUNTY ARCHAEOLOGY DAY

On Sunday, July 25, the Preble County Historical Society will host their second annual Archaeology Day.  This event will take place from 1-5 pm at the Preble County Historical Center, 7693 Swartsel Road, Eaton, (1 mile NW of Gratis, 6 miles SE of Eaton accessible off St. Rt. 122. Admission to the Historical Center on July 25 is FREE to all society members and to all children under the age of 18. A modest donation of only $2 is requested from all other guests.

One of the many highlights of the day will feature the Miami Valley Flute Circle & Southern Singers Native American flute music, along with drumming and dancing.

Potter Kosia Oshiro will show pit-fired pottery: hand crafted functional use pottery, fired in a pit on the grounds at the Historical Center. Pots will be placed in the fire pit early in the morning and will be uncovered about 4:30pm in the afternoon. What a delight it is to see how the clay transforms into beautiful works of art!

The day’s programming will include fossil and archaeological specimen identification from 1:30-5pm.

From 2-4pm, children’s activities will include games, puzzles, traditional Indian culture games, word games, and a scavenger hunt.

Beginning at 2pm, “The History and Archaeology of Fort Meigs”, will be presented by Ohio Historical Society Archaeologist Bill Pickard.

At 3pm, Boonshoft Museum of Discovery Archaeologist Lynn Simonelli, will present “Archaeology in the Miami Valley Area”.

The society’s lunch stand will be open serving grilled sandwiches, salads, homemade pie, ice cream, and drinks. The Center’s buildings will be open for touring, hiking trails will be open with the opportunity to take a wagon ride to the newly restored wetland area.

Come join us for an afternoon of learning more about our early settlers of the area at the Preble County Historical Center on Sunday, July 25 from 1 – 5 pm.

Old Fashioned Independence Celebration

For those wanting to kick back, relax, and get away from the hustle and bustle of the busy holiday schedule; plan to spend Sunday, July 4th at the Preble County Historical Center! A tribute to our country’s Independence will be held from 12 noon–5pm.  The afternoon is planned for family fun so plan to spend the afternoon at the Historical Center, located at 7693 Swartsel Rd., Eaton, OH. (1 mile N. of Gratis, 6 miles SE of Eaton off St. Rt. 122, only 1 mile from St. Rt. 725). Society members & all kids are admitted FREE, others only a $2.00 donation! Old-fashioned cakewalks, traditional woodworking, kid’s games, & contests, activities offered for everyone’s enjoyment!  The Eaton Community Chorus performance will begin at 2:30pm, followed by the Eaton Community Band at
3:30pm. The band will continue their patriotic tunes following the combined performance.

The lunch stand will be open featuring homemade cakes, pies, homemade ice cream, sandwiches, salads and drinks. The 1813 Lewisburg Log House, 1860’s era Sayler-Swartsel House & Gift Shop, Smokehouse, Bank Barn, Exhibit Hall, and hiking trails will all be open for touring. Visitors will also have the opportunity to hike the trails and take a wagon ride trip to the new restored wetland area. The Preble County Historical Center is a hidden-gem in the southwest Ohio area, 255-acres of forested land, creek, streams, farmland, hiking trails, and historic museum buildings. July 24 – Car Cruise-In & Dance 4:00-7:00 pm at Preble County Senior Center, 800 East St. Clair Street, Eaton. Participant Entry Fee $10. No admission charge for general public, but donations will be appreciated. Food will be available for purchase. This event is a fundraiser for the Council on Aging’s Transportation Department. The Herb Society of the Preble County Historical Society is hosting its Fifth Annual Herb Tea Luncheon, which will begin at 12 o’clock noon on Saturday, June 12th. The theme this year is of Tea~Lite-ful, incorporating a delightful herbal tea luncheon along with an educational program about early lighting devices.

The delectable, and informative, herbal tea luncheon will be held in the Sayler Swartsel house at the Preble County Historical Center, located at 7693 Swartsel Rd, Eaton, Ohio (accessible off St. 122, 6 miles SE of Eaton, 1 mile NW of Gratis).

The menu will feature tasty herb recipes that are healthy will be offered, including soup, an assortment of tempting tea sandwiches, chicken salad on croissant, fresh fruit, scones and clotted cream, shortbread and jam, lemon curd, sherbet, and iced and hot teas.

The Vintage Lighting program is to be presented by Jan Livingston Brady, will show and tell about her interesting collection of early lighting devices and how women used these devices to perform their daily chores.
